Hemifacial spasm: treatment by posterior fossa surgery.

Nine cases of hemifacial spasm have been treated by posterior fossa exploration without mortality or significant morbidity. In only three was definite pathology found, but the hemifacial spasm was abolished in eight patients and markedly diminished in the remaining patient. The condition has reccurred in one patient. Microsurgical techniques make the operation safe and accurate. We suggest that...

Intravascular embolization of a cerebellar arteriovenous malformation for treatment of hemifacial spasm.

Hemifacial spasm consists of involuntary contractions of the facial muscles, usually caused by vascular compression of cranial nerve VII , near its exit zone from the brainstem [17]. Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are a rare cause of this condition [2, 3]. We report a case of hemifacial spasm caused by an extensive cerebellar AVM, which was successfully treated by intravascular embolization .

Vascular tortuosity in relationship with hypertension and posterior fossa volume in hemifacial spasm

BACKGROUND Hemifacial spasm (HFS) is a disabling neurological condition. Vascular tortuosity in HFS patients has not been quantified objectively and its relationship with hypertension and posterior fossa volume (PF) is unknown. In a case control magnetic resonance imaging and angiographic (MRI/A) study, we quantified and compared the vascular tortuosity in HFS and controls, and evaluated its re...

A successful treatment of coexistent hemifacial spasm and trigeminal neuralgia caused by a huge cerebral arteriovenous malformation: a case report.

Regardless hemifacial spasm (HFS) or trigeminal neuralgia (TN) is commonly caused by an offending artery, 36 cases caused by an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) have been reported in the literature. However, the concurrent HFS and TN caused by AVM have never been reported so far. We reported a case of coexistent HFS-TN associated with a huge AVM, and the symptoms of both spasm and pain relieved...
